We Are Family

When asked what family looks like, people would give all sorts of contradictory answers. When asked what family means, we can all agree on LOVE. It’s the essential element binding us together, no matter our differences. But if love is the only criteria for family, why do we always seem to see the same nuclear image of a family, no matter where we turn? It’s a trope deeply ingrained in our society, but not one that always accurately reflects our lives, and the only way to challenge it is through representation.
For this reason, Traffic’s Izak Zenou, one of the most renowned and prolific illustrators in the world, was thrilled to partner with writer Michael Joosten and Random House to create a set of board books that show kids an image of a loving and inclusive world.

The books follow same-sex couples in their busy day-to-day lives with their children—eating breakfast, getting dressed, going on a playdate, heading out to the park, and settling in at night with a bubble bath and a good-night lullaby. The stories are sweet and relatable, and the bright, playful illustrations will capture the attention of children and adults alike.
