Móyòsóré Martins X Olivier Varenne Gallery
The Artist’s Inaugural European Solo exhibition at Varenne contemporary/Geneva Sept. 11- Nov. 1 Address: 37-39 Rue des Bains, Geneva, Switzerland
Móyòsóré Martins (b. 1986) creates vibrant paintings which explore themes of mixed cultures, race, personal narrative, and spirituality, speaking to us all, no matter our background.
Through the Light will immerse you in the layered and evocative world of Martins. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Martins is the child of a Brazilian father and a Nigerian mother from Ekiti state. Despite his passion for art, his father initially discouraged him from pursuing it. He studied computer science in Côte d’Ivoire before moving to New York City in 2016, where he was finally able to follow his artistic dreams.
Martins’ paintings are a dynamic fusion of his African and Brazilian heritage, Yoruba traditions, and the influences of New York pop culture. Often working at night with jazz as his soundtrack, he combines the complexities of adult life with a free-thinking, and child-like approach. His work features enigmatic figures and abstract forms that capture a raw, honest essence, acknowledges the passage of time, and reveals his intuitive and animated inner world.
In Martins’s words, "We are the ones who go and expire." His art becomes a cultural record of his personal journey, preserving the essence of his experiences and reflections.
We hope to see you at the opening,
