Space Oddity

David Bowie seems to be one of society’s rare enigmas, being that his presence has only seemed to have grown as his time on earth had ended. Although fans of Bowie might argue he was never of this earth in the first place. Both his music and his style seem to have transcended time; never quite being homologous with the common culture of his own era and having sustained success decades later.

Bowie’s career escalated with the success of his song “Space Oddity”, which he was inspired to write after watching the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, staying true to this intergalactic trope. This song specifically came up in our office the other day when we were looking at some Izak Zenou’s new illustrations. In these illustrations, designed for Henri Bendel, Izak calls upon an outer space motif, paired uniquely with his unmistakable fashion-minded composition. It was while looking at these and completing some work at her desk that Michelle began to sing to herself Bowie’s “Space Oddity”. It was a moment that was barely even conscious but the connections between the Bowie and Izak’s drawings were just not ignorable.

Maybe Bowie is at the front of our conscious after his recent residency in New York. The Brooklyn Museum just ended its "David Bowie is" exhibition, which explores Bowie's creative process through observation of his objects. The exhibit spent five years, touring around the world, and came to the Brooklyn Museum for its last performance. Although the exhibit concluded, Bowie's creative spirit is deeply rooted in New York and will live long after he is gone.
